Bessie HAMMANS

FAIRFIELD -- Bessie HAMMANS, 88, of Jackson, Miss., died April 12, at Comper's Nursing Home in Jackson.

She was born Nov. 27, 1901, in Fairfield to John H. and Alice BEDINGER HAMMANS.

She attended Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant and graduated in 1925 from Parson's (sic) College in Fairfield. She taught at Allen Home in Ashville, N.C., and received nurses training at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. She was a private nurse and a housemother for a children's orphanage in Detroit, Mich. She moved to Chicago and attended Moody Bible Institute and taught high school at Piney Woods, Miss., before joining the organizers of the Pioneer Gospel Mission in Jackson, Miss., until retiring in 1983. She was a member of the Mennonite church, attended First Baptist Church in Jackson, Miss., and was a Sunday school teacher for many years.

She is survived by a sister, Dorothy SIMMONS of Fairfield.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Francis.

The body has been cremated.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield is in charge of arrangements.
