One Of City's Oldest Citizens Taken In Death

Death came yesterday to Alexander "Dad" HAMILTON, 98, one of Fairfield's oldest residents.

He passed away about 3:15 p.m. at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. GOODWIN, 206 E. Briggs street. He had been seriously ill since December.

"Dad" HAMILTON as his many friends knew him had been a resident of this community for over 41 years, and he always claimed he held a record as far as gathering mushrooms are concerned.

When he was 89 years old, on May 17, 1951, he made his annual trip to the country to gather mushrooms for the 83rd consecutive year. No one ever disputed his claim.

He said he started hunting mushrooms when only six years of age while living in Canton, Ill., and hunted them every year since until he was 89 years of age. He always claimed he could eat a dinner plate "stacked high".

Last rites will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Weston Behner funeral home with the Rev. Donald Eagle in charge. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.

Alexander HAMILTON was born Nov. 12, 1861, at Canton, Ill., the son of Alexander and DeLinda HAMILTON. He was married to Delphina GREEN on May 17, 1892, at Canton. She passed away Aug. 31, 1934.

He had been a resident of Fairfield for over 41 years at the time of his death. He was affiliated with the Baptist church and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. W. E. GOODWIN, Fairfield, and Mrs. L. Q. KEESEY, Ottumwa; nine grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, one son, four sisters and one brother.
