Takes his own life in barn on his farm north of Fairfield
Charles "Shorty" HAISTON, farmer living five miles north of Fairfield, shot and killed himself Thursday evening. His body was found in the barn after he had taken his own life by shooting himself in the head with a .22 rifle.
It was reported that the bullet entered his right temple. The suicide took place about 8:00 p.m. Christmas Eve.
According to authorities, HAISTON had been in Fairfield until about 6:30 that evening. As he was driving home his car sideswiped one driven by a neighbor living nearby. The neighbor reported the accident to county authorities.
After sideswiping the car on his way home, it was reported that the HAISTON car slid into the ditch near his home. After making several attempts to get the car out, it was stated that he went to the barn.
A neighbor across the road George Boughner, heard Mrs. HAISTON trying to locate her husband and sensed something was wrong. He went to the home, and later found Mr. HAISTON dead, lying in the barn.
Charles S. HAISTON was born October 4, 1874, at Wayland, Iowa. He had been an employee at the Iowa Malleable Iron Works for the past 43 years. He moved to his farm north of Fairfield seven years ago.
He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Helen WOOD, Ft. Worth, Texas; and Mrs. Clara BOLEY, Davenport; and one sister, Mrs. Blanche POTTER, San Diego, California. Eight grandchildren also survive.
The body is at the Hoskins funeral home. It is possible that services will be held tomorrow, pending word from distant relatives. Information regarding the arrangements can be secured by calling the Hoskins funeral home.
