JOHN B. SMITH RITES AT 10:30

Today In Charge of Dr. U. S. Smith; Burial In Evergreen Cemetery

The funeral services for John B. SMITH, who died Monday evening were held at Evergreen cemetery this morning at 10:30 o'clock, in charge of Dr. U. S. Smith of the Methodist church.

The pall bearers were: B. F. Black, Wm. Leathers, Frank G. Chidester, Harold Zeigler, F. O. Cooper and D. F. Spratt.

Mr. SMITH had resided in this city for about thirty years. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., in the year 1842. He enlisted in Company C, 123d Pennsylvania Infantry in August, 1862, and was mustered out at the close of the war, the regiment being commanded by Colonel J. B. Clarke.

Mr. SMITH's regiment was engaged in the bloody battle at Fredericksburg, December 13, 1862, in which the Union losses were 1138 killed, 9105 wounded and 2078 missing. The regiment was afterwards engaged in several lesser engagements.

Note: Buried in Lot 2nd.237. He has a military stone, however he is identified on it as John HAHN with no birth or death dates. According to the U.S. Armed Forces Grave Registrations, John was born Nov. 18, 1842, and died on July 30, 1928. His Jefferson County Death Certificate is under the surname SMITH, giving his birthdate as "Prob 1842", and age about 86 years. He died at the County Home.
