Phil GREINER, 18, dies in farm mishap

Phillip Anthony GREINER, 18, Route 4, died as a result of injuries sustained in a farm equipment accident at his home Saturday. He was pronounced dead at 5:11 p.m. Saturday at Jefferson County Hospital by Jefferson County Medical Examiner Dr. T. J. Sutton.

Sutton said GREINER died as a result of brain injuries suffered from a fractured skull. Sutton said GREINER was driving a tractor carrying a hay ring when one of the two bars connecting the device apparently hit a wheel, flipped up and struck him in the head.

Sutton said GREINER and one of the bars were found on the ground while the tractor continued on and crashed into some trees. GREINER was alone in a farm field when the mishap occurred.

GREINER was born June 25, 1968, in Mount Pleasant, the son of Donald and Virginia SMITH GREINER. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, attended Confraternity of Christian Doctrine classes for 13 years and he was an altar boy.

He was a 1987 graduate of Fairfield High School, co-president of the 1986-1987 student body and 1987 sweetheart king. He was involved in wrestling and football at school and was a Plainsmen 4-H Club member for six years.

His hobbies included hunting, fishing, horseback riding, athletics and friends.

GREINER is survived by his parents; maternal grandmother A. Gertrude SMITH of Monmouth, Ill.; three brothers, Mark J., Route 2, Jeff A., Route 4 and Chris C., Route 4; and two sisters, Cindy L. GREINER of Cedar Rapids and Sally Jo GREINER of Route 4. A sister-in-law, Karen, Mark's wife, and their daughters Alisha and Sabrina, also survive. He was preceded in death by maternal grandfather David Clete SMITH and paternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Charles GREINER of Washington.

The funeral service will be held at 10b a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. William J. Sullivan officiating. Prayers for a Christian wake will be at 7 p.m. tonight at Behner Funeral Home with visitation to follow. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to a scholarship fund to be awarded each year to a Fairfield High School senior in memory of Phillip A. GREINER. Memorials may be mailed to the GREINER family or left at the funeral home or high school.
