OBITUARY

Miss Nellie B. GREEN

Miss Nellie Belle GREEN only child of Morrison and Sarah (McCORMICK) GREEN was born on a farm east of Fairfield, Feb. 8, 1876, died in LaJolla, Calif., June 1, 1926 her parents having preceded her in death fourteen years. She lived most of her life in her cottage home at 411 North Main street, Fairfield, was graduated from the Fairfield High school in the class of 1894 and was graduated from Parsons college in the class of 1898. She was an active member of the Elzevir Literary society. She had a diploma from the Jefferson County Normal institute. Later she took a 4-year course in the University of Chicago in home economics, at the completion of which she received a diploma and at which time the degree of bachelor of education with all its rights privileges and honors were confered on her. She also completed a course in the correspondence-study department of the University of Chicago in English language literature and rhetoric.

Last year she attended a meeting in Washington, D. C., of the National Educational association of which she has been a member for years. She taught a number of terms of school in the country and city and her very highest ambition was along educational lines and for the betterment of mankind. She was very modest and unassuming and that she was a lady of the very highest type in every respect all must gladly admit, those knowing her best and most intimately loving her most and and (sic) the better appreciating of her many and ennobling traits of character. Her kindness and sympathy were clearly shown in her unselfish care and nursing of her aged Uncle Norvill in his lingering last sickness and her "Aunt Harriet," whom she so kindly cared for.

Nellie had been seriously afflicted for a long time and bore her suffering with such Christian fortitude and so uncomplainingly that those around her did not fully realize her condition. She belonged to the M. E. church and had been a christian from childhood. It may interest her friends to quote from letters we have just received from her close friends, Mrs. Elizabeth (Heaton) Whitney and Miss Abigail Heaton, who were near her in California frequently with her. They write thus:

"Nellie has made friends here who were wonderful to her." "Nellie was really a wonderful girl and her mind seemed to grow keener with her illness and she had her mind to the last." "Nellie was one of my very best friends as we had known each other ever since we were in the second primary went through school and college together and were for many years in Mrs. Zimmerman's S. S. class. It is going to be hard for me to adjust myself to an existence in which she does not fill a pretty big part."

I will add ever since she was in California she has had her dear and exceedingly kind friend. Miss Clara Grice with or near her, so that in the closing hour she was (as we all know who knew Clara) kindly cared for And I will further write in losing Nellie it would seem we had lost a child of our own and in these closing days of her life, we have endeavored to carry out her every wish and request since she left us.

Her remains were laid to rest in the Evergreen cemetery with those of her parents.

Mr. and Mrs. M. D. Shirk!
