Nelson GREEN died at his home in this city Friday morning, no doubt, as he had so long lived, trusting in Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord. Funeral services were hold (sic) Sunday afternoon from the family residence on Grimes and Fifth streets. They were conducted by Rev. J. E. Corley and attended by a large circle of relatives and old time neighbors. The remains were laid to rest in the Evergreen cemetery. The pall bearers were his grandsons, Delzell Nelson, John W., Clarence H., Nelson and Oscar C. GREEN and James Nelson COLEMAN.
Mr. GREEN was born in Bedford county, Penn., April 14th, (sic - April 4th), 1816, and grew to manhood in his native state. He came to Iowa in 1848 and settled on a farm in Buchanan township, near Richwoods, where he lived for almost sixty years. On his twenty-eighth birthday anniversary he was married to Elizabeth WARNER, who, in age and feebleness extreme, still lingers, waiting for the heavenly father's call. Seven children were born to them, one of whom died in infancy. Three of the others, L. H., Harry W. and Mary J., live in Fairfield, Dennis C. and Ira W. on the old home farm, and Mrs. L. B. COLEMAN in Davenport. Two aged brothers, Dr. W. J. and Sylvester GREEN, and a sister, Mrs. Samuel ALLENDER, and a large number of grandchildren and other near relatives live in and near Fairfield. In 1828, at the tender age of twelve years, at a campmeeting held on his father's farm in Pennsylvania, he gave his heart to God and his name to the Methodist Episcopal church, in which he remained a staunch and loyal member for three-fourths of a century. He had been afflicted with illness for a number of years and for several years past, owing to impaired sight and hearing had been compelled to remain much at home. He came to Fairfield in October, 1902.
