CHARLES E. GOODELL
Charles E. GOODELL, former resident of Fairfield was born at Blyton, Ill. on March 14, 1877, and passed away quite suddenly at his place of employment at Norwalk, Calif. April 9, 1943, at the age of 66 years and 21 days.
When but six months old his family removed to Arkansas, locating near Van Buren, where his boyhood was spent, but in his young manhood he returned to Illinois, where he learned the Moulders trade and became quite proficient in that profession, and spent a number of years working at Canton and other nearby communities in Illinois.
While at Canton he was united in marriage, his wife being the former Flora Mae FOSTER. To this union were born four children, Letha, Lyle, Laverne and Dorothy. His wife and one son, Lyle (sic - Roland Lyle), preceded him in death.
At the time of the opening of the Iowa Malleable Iron foundry in Fairfield Mr. GOODELL came here and accepted a position with that firm, a position which he held for many years. Later he went to work in the Dexter foundry as a moulder, but later taking duties of night foreman, which position he held for 14 years or until his health broke some two and a half years ago, at which time he went to California. There he joined his wife and son Laverne, who had preceded him, and remained until his passing.
His wife passed away in Fairfield on July 31, 1942 while visiting in this community with relatives and friends.
In special meetings held by Evangelist A. K. Harper in this city during the winter of 1914 Mr. GOODELL accepted Christ, uniting with the First Methodist church, later becoming interested in the work of the New Chicago Mission, serving for a number of years as a member of the official board of that organization, also serving as president of the Fisherman Club gospel team, under L. E. Kuhns, superintendent of the New Chicago work.
As a Christian, Mr. GOODELL was faithful and fundamental, as a friend he was loyal and true, in his home he was a devoted husband, a kind and loving father. He was a generous and kindly neighbor. -- truly a good man has gone to his reward.
He leaves to mourn his loss, one son, Laverne F. GOODELL, of South Gate, Calif. and two daughters Mrs. Letha COURTNEY of this city and Mrs. Dorothy ESTES of Bettendorf, Iowa, together with seven grandchildren, Patsy COURTNEY and Mildred LATHROP of this city, Kay ESTES of Bettendorf, David and Dennis GOODELL of South Gate, Calif. and Mrs. Dorothy CAMPBELL and Mrs. Maxine MANLEY, also of this city as well as other relatives and a host of friends.
The body arrived in Fairfield from California last Wednesday and was taken to the Hoskins funeral Home, where services were conducted at 3:00 p.m. by Rev. Ernest McGrew. Solos were rendered by Mrs. McGrew, with Miss Betty Lou Miller at the piano.
Interment was in Evergreen cemetery beside the bodies of his wife and son Lyle.
