MRS. W. J. GILBERT
Nancy Margaret GILBERT, daughter of Missouri GRUBB PERRY and Jacob PERRY, was born Jan. 16th 1866, in Jefferson county. She died May 6th, 1941 at the age of 75 years, 3 months and 20 days.
Mrs. GILBERT was born in a log cabin southeast of Fairfield on the farm which now belongs to A. W. Hisel. The home in which she spent her childhood is still standing on that farm which the Hisels purchased from her mother. Her father died when she was eight years old and she experienced many hardships as a result of his early death and also the reconstruction following the Civil War. She attended the Bradshaw school as did the young man who afterward became her husband.
The PERRYs moved to Fairfield in 1882 and the daughter attended the public schools graduating from the high school in 1886 with a class of girls. There were no boys graduating. She attended Normal School in Dixon, Ill., and then went to Culbertson, Neb., where she worked in the office of her brother, Lucian PERRY, who was county clerk at that time. At the expiration of his term she taught in the schools of that city for two years, at which time she returned to Fairfield to take up her duties in the local schools. She taught ten years serving in both the Logan and Franklin buildings.
She married William John GILBERT who was born on the same day as herself on Jan. 9th, 1900. They resided on the GILBERT farm southeast of Fairfield until 1904 when they moved into the city. To this union were born five children: Abbie Elizabeth BOGEN, of Detroit, Mich.; Alice Margaret ZILLMAN of this city; Frederick William of Redding, Calif.; Robert Perry who died in infancy and Harold J. of Brooklyn, New York. Eight grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. L. W. MEYERS of Atwood, Kansas, also survive. She was preceded in death by her husband who also died very suddenly on July 20, 1929. Two brothers and three sisters have also passed away.
Mrs. GILBERT was a life-long member of the Methodist and the Wesleyan Bible class and had attended their services up to the last. She had been a member of Hawkeye Rebekah Lodge 386 since 1898 and had served as Noble Grand of that organization. She was a member of the O. E. S. and the Senior club connected with it.
She was a loving mother and devoted wife. Her home, family and friends were her chief concern. She had always taken an active interest in her church, her yard and flowers and her home. Her influence will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
