JOHN GILBERT DIES SUDDENLY AT FARM HOME

Prominent Jefferson County Resident Passes Away After Illness

John L. GILBERT, one of Jefferson county's outstanding citizens, passed away at 11:45 Tuesday evening, at his home in Perlee. Mr. GILBERT was stricken quite suddenly, having been ill for only a few hours.

Mr. GILBERT was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas GILBERT, a pioneer couple in Jefferson county, whose childhood homes had been in Ireland. He was born Feb. 3, 1868, in the Antioch community, where he has spent his entire life.

John GILBERT was known throughout this section of the state as a successful farmer and a trader. Until 1931 he was in partnership with his two brothers in the raising of purebred hereford cattle. Until the time of his death he was the acknowledged leader in the raising of hogs in this county. He farmed approximately 400 acres near Perlee or about seven miles north of Fairfield.

Mr. GILBERT's record in Jefferson county farming circles was indeed high. He was a charter member of the Jefferson County Farm Bureau, and for the past two years had been president of that organization, his term of office expiring only Dec. 21. For two years prior to that he had been treasurer of the organization. Another prominent office he had held for the past two years was the presidency of the Jefferson county soil conservation association. At the termination of his terms of office in these two organizations less than two weeks ago, he refused to let his name be put up for re-election.

He was president of the Jefferson County Fair Board for a number of years, and at the time of the last fair, in the year 1925.

He was a prominent member of the Rotary club, having been active in this organization for a number of years. He was a member of the Methodist church.

He is survived by his wife, three daughters, Esther of Minneapolis, Eunice of Chicago and Mary of Linden and one son John at home. Two brothers, W. D. GILBERT and Sam T. GILBERT and two sisters, Mrs. Fred FLINSPACH and Mrs. Edward FLINSPACH also survive.
