Esther A. MENDENHALL was the daughter of Daniel and Susannah MENDENHALL and was born November 22, 1842, in a log house situated on lots 1 and 2, block 24, old plat of Fairfield, where the Presbyterian church now stands. She was the oldest child of the MENDENHALL family, her parents, being pioneer settlers having come here in 1842.
She was married to Charles F. GEORGE, February 12, 1861, in the home in which she passed and which was known as the old MENDENHALL home on West Burlington street, built over 70 years ago. Her husband died July 20, 1922, at the age of 90 years, 2 months and 5 days.
Mrs. GEORGE united with the Methodist church a number of years ago. She is survived by one son, Edgar J. GEORGE, who is a physician in Chicago and who arrived last night to be at the bed side of his mother, when she passed away. She also leaves one brother, Rev. Lewis MENDENHALL of this city and two sisters, Mrs. S. J. MORRIS of Fort Morgan, Colo., and Mrs. Anna GARD of Bloomington, Ill.
Mr. GEORGE came from Joliet, Ill., to this city in 1859 and began work as a jeweler in the city and continued his business except four years which he spent in Montana until August, 1892, when he sold the store to T. E. McLean who had previously been in his employ.
Mrs. GEORGE was a woman of force and character and intelligence with a keen interest in life even in the later years of sickness and advanced years. She won strong friendships and kept them through the years and in all the relations of life discharged her duties faithfully and well.

*Transcribed for genealogy purposes; I have no relation to the person(s) mentioned.Note: Buried initially in the Fairfield Abbey, and later moved to Evergreen Cemetery, Lot 2nd.208½ with her husband Charles. The Abbey was a mausoleum built in 1915 which stood in what is currently the 6th Addition of Evergreen Cemetery. Over time, the building deteriorated, and those buried there were moved to other locations. The Abbey was demolished in 1968. Her gravestone is mistakenly engraved with son Edgar's birth year of 1863; Esther was born in 1842.
