Lt. Col. Earl Ellis, killed in the Caroline Islands May 12 under mysterious conditions, was a son of Mrs. A. W. Ellis of Pratt, Kansas, who formerly was Miss Kate Axline of Fairfield, daughter of Rev. Andrew Axline, head of the old Fairfield college. He was a world figure; profound thinker and scholar.....Pratt Daily Tribune received here by Wm. L. Long.....

“Young U. S. Marines who attend classes in Ellis Hall at the Marine Corps Station, Quantico, Virginia, may find special meaning in the last line of the inscription on a memorial plaque honoring the colonel who tried to protect his county from a threat few could recognize: HIS HEART WAS DAUNTLESS AND FULL OF COURAGE.”
