Hugh Walter GARY, 54, of Fairfield, died Saturday morning, Aug. 16, 1997, of lung cancer.
The body has been cremated. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Royar officiating. The family requests memorials to the Fairfield Police Department K-9 Unit instead of flowers. Behner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
GARY was born Nov. 17, 1942, in Pasadena, Calif., the son of Hugh R. and Imbie Sophia LEHIKOINEN GARY. He married Ann Elisabeth THOMPSON on Aug. 25, 1968, in Fairfield. He was the former owner/operator of the Jefferson County Ambulance Service from 1971 to July 1987. He also was the co-owner of Gary's Paradise Donuts from January 1989 to December 1995. He was a former member of the Jefferson County Police Reserve, and dispatched in Jefferson, Van Buren, Wapello and Davis counties. He had been medical director for RAGBRAI for several years.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Scott Matthew of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; one daughter, Heather Lynn of Des Moines; and one sister, Myrna L. GARY of Chevy Chase, Md.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one son, Timothy Wayne.
