J. S. GANTZ, PIONEER AND VETERAN OF CIVIL WAR, DIED LAST SUNDAY
Death of One of Oldest Settlers of the County Follows Several Weeks Illness.

Jacob S. GANTZ, Jefferson county pioneer and veteran of the Civil war, died at his home in this city last Sunday evening, February 19m, at the age of eighty-seven years. Death followed an illness of several weeks.

Mr. GANTZ was, until failing health prevented, one of the most active of local G. A. R. members, taking great interest in the veterans and in all that affected them, being a constant attendant at all state and national G. A. R. encampments. He had the distinction of being one of the oldest members of the I. O. O. F. order in the county and also took an active part in the work of the order.

Mr. GANTZ was born near Columbus, Ohio, in November, 1835. In 1850 he came to Locust Grove township, in this county, with his parents who engaged in farming. He was married in 1859 to Miss Louisa SMITH, of Ohio, and two years later responded to the call of his country and enlisted in Company M of the Fourth Iowa cavalry and served the greater part of the war. He saw a great deal of active fighting and engaged in several of the big battles of the war, in one of which he was wounded in the arm so badly that amputation of the member was found necessary.

For three terms Mr. GANTZ served as sheriff of this county, and later as assessor. He was for years engaged in the livery business in Fairfield and also conducted the Gantz hotel. His wife died in 1880 (sic - 1881) and two years later Mr. GANTZ married Mrs. Margaret ROCK.

Surviving Mr. GANTZ are his widow and the following children of the first marriage; Dr. B. N. GANTZ, Fairfield; Ernest and James of Los Angeles; Mrs. Lindsay of California (sic - Mrs. ANDERSON of Lindsay, CA); also the following children of the second marriage, Mrs. C. Y. SMITH of Ottumwa; Mrs. L. H. ISRAEL of Fairfield; Mrs. Elva MORRISEY, of Kansas City.

Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday, attended by the G. A. R. and I. O. O. F., conducted by Rev. Tennant of the Methodist church.
