Barbara E. McNiel, 71,of Appleton, Wis., died Thursday, July 28, 2005, at her home.

A memorial service was Sunday at Wichmann Funeral Home in Appleton, with the Rev. Jordan Kuczwara officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to ThedaCare At Home Hospice or the American Diabetes Association.

Mrs. McNiel was born Dec. 1, 1933, in Iowa, the daughter of Theron and Mae Shelton Cochran. She married John McNiel Jan. 30, 1954.

As a young woman, Mrs. McNiel excelled in basketball, and enjoyed sporting events of all kinds.

Mrs. McNiel enjoyed golfing, cooking, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband; four children, Sheryl Groene and husband Dennis of Kimberly, Wis., Roger McNiel and wife Mary of Middleton, Wis., Mark McNiel and wife Paula of Neenah, Wis., and Paul McNiel and wife Shawna of Cabot, Ark.; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one infant sister; and four brothers and sisters, Harold Cochran, Bruce Cochran, Margaret Pearson, and Dwight Cochran.
