Well Known and Highly Respected Citizen Suffered Fifteen MonthsFred M. GAINES passed away this morning at 4:45 oclock at his home, 104 South D street, after an illness from cancer which has extended over 15 months.
He was operated upon in 1924 at Mayo Brothers and was for some time a little better but it proved to be only temporary.
Funeral services will be held from the home Friday afternoon at 2:30 oclock in charge of Dr. Gilbert Vorhies. Interment will be made in Evergreen cemetery.
Fred M. GAINES was born in Fairfield, Iowa, June 21, 1873 and has always made this his home. He was at one time connected with the Gaines Brothers Hardware store of this city but for the past 17 years has been traveling salesman for Harper-McIntire Hardware of Ottumwa, traveling over southeastern Iowa where he made a host of friends and where everyone knew Fred M. GAINES.
In 1893 he was united in marriage to Ella DAY (sic - Ella KEIM), a Fairfield girl and to this union were born three children, Mrs. John WARD, Floyd and Richard all of this city who with the widow and two brothers, L. O. and Frank survive him.

Laid To Rest At Evergreen Among Profusion Of Beautiful FlowersFuneral services for Fred M. GAINES who passed away Wednesday morning at his home, 104 South D street after an illness of fifteen months, were held yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the home in charge of Dr. Gilbert Vorhies assisted by Rev. C. E. Ward of Brighton. The home cound not nearly accommodate the friends who gathered to pay their respects. The following men served as pall bearers, Ernest Bailey, P. L. O'Neil, O. R. Corey, Fred Neibert, Ed DuVall and O. A. Harper
Mrs. L. W. VanNostrand and Miss Cora Ball very beautifully sang, "Abide With Me" and "Perfect Day". The floral offerings were profuse and beautiful, but they only partially bespoke the high esteem in which this highly respected and loyal citizen was held. He was laid to rest in Evergreen cemetery.

To All Whom It May Concern:
Notice is hereby given that an instrument, purporting to be the last Will and Testament of F. M. GAINES, Deceased, is now on file in the office of the Clerk of the District Court of Jefferson county, and that Thursday, February 25, A. D. 1926 at 2 oclock p.m., it being the fourth day of the February Term, 1926, of said court, has been set for proof and final hearing of same.
Witness my hand and the seal of said Court this 30th day of January, 1926.
