FRESHWATER IS FOUND DEAD IN SPEEDER PLANT
Body Will Arrive In Fairfield This Afternoon; Funeral Monday

Archie E. FRESHWATER, 41 (sic - 43), of Cedar Rapids, son of Mr. and Mrs. John E. FRESHWATER of this city, was found dead at one o'clock yesterday in the machine shop of the Speeder Machinery Corporation plant, where he was employed as a machinist. His skull had been crushed by a 700-pound wheel which had been leaning against a bench when the men stopped work for lunch.

How and by whom the wheel was moved is a mystery. After eating his lunch FRESHWATER returned to the shop ahead of the other men punching the time clock at 12:49 p.m. So far as has been learned there was no other person in the shop with him. He had placed an old coat over shavings on the floor near the bench and had laid down apparently to rest until time to resume work. Three fellow workmen found FRESHWATER's body when they returned to work at one o'clock.

Part of the wheel lay on his head and apparently it had not rolled after striking him according to their story. They lifted the wheel and leaned it against the bench again. There was no wire or other attachment on it by which it might have been pulled or pushed over, but it was said that it might have been set at such a balance that a slight pressure would cause it to fall.

Mr. FRESHWATER was born in Fairfield, April 11, 1888. He is survived by his wife and one son, Leroy, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John E. FRESHWATER 804 South Depot street, and one sister, Mrs. Catherine CLARK of Oakdale, Calif.

The body will arrive in Fairfield this afternoon and will be taken to the Campbell funeral home where services will be held Monday afternoon in charge of Rev. Fred G. Crown. Interment in Evergreen cemetery.
