Archie FRESHWATER Dead.

Archie FRESHWATER, a well known resident of this vicinity, died at his home about three miles west of this city last night shortly before twelve o'clock after a lingering illness.

He is survived by his wife, four sons and one daughter. Mr. FRESHWATER has been a patient sufferer for nearly three years and death came as a blessed release from this earth's sorrows and cares.

Funeral services will be held from the home Friday afterdoon (sic) at 1:30 o'clock. Rev. Thomas Osborn will conduct the services. The interment will be made in Evergreen cemetery.

Life of Archibald FRESHWATER.

Archibald FRESHWATER, son of Wm. and Sarah FRESHWATER was born in Washington county, Pa., Dec. 19, 1839. His parents came to Van Buren county, Iowa, when he was four years of age, residing there for two years, then went back to Pa , and resided there until 1855, when they returned to Van Buren county Iowa, from this county Mr. FRESHWATER enlisted in the 19th Iowa Infantry in the early days of the war of the Rebellion, owing to a cut on one of his limbs he was rejected by the medical staff.

Not content to remain at home while the stars and stripes were being fired upon at the front, he enlisted in Co. H, 3rd Iowa Cavalry, Feb. 1st, 1864, and remained with his regiment until Aug. 19, 1865.

Upon being discharged at the close of the War, he returded (sic) to Van Buren, county where he was united in marriage to Emily Jane STINE, Sept. 27th, 1865. Four sons, Wm. E. and James A. of Fairfield, Geo. W. and John of Fairfield township and one daughter, Ella, now the wife of Geo. SCHLIEF, of Fairfield township was born to them.

The family resided in Van Buren county until 1876, when they moved to Jefferson county where they have scince (sic) made their home. He is survived by his sons and daughter, and his wife. He had not been in good health for the past seven years and had been rapidly failing for some months. On last Wednesday morning at 6 o'clock he was stricken with paralysis and never recovered from the stroke, passing away at midnight of that day.

During the last six years of his life he was quite helpess and unable to go about except with some friend. Death came in the nature of relief to him. The entire family was with him in his last hours though he did not regain consciousness after the strike.

Answered Last Roll Call.

Archibald FRESHWATER died at his home west of this city the morning of the 13th inst. He had been a sufferer from paralysis for seven years, much of the time in a helpless condition. Mr. FRESHWATER was born in Washington county, Penn., December 13th, 1839, a son of William and Sarah FRESHWATER. The family came to Van Buren county, this state, when he was a child of four years and grew to manhood there. When the Civil war came he enlisted in the Nineteenth Iowa infantry, but was rejected by the examining surgeons. February 1st, 1864, he again enlisted, in Company H, Third Iowa cavalry, and was given an honorable discharge at the close of hostilities, August 19th, 1865. He then returned to Van Buren county, where he was married to Emily Jane STINE September 28th, 1865. They were the parents of five children, all of whom now live in this vicinity--William E., James A., George W., John N., and Mrs. George SCHLIEF. The family came to this county in 1876. Mr. FRESHWATER was an industrious and progressive farmer and for many years was actively identified with the county fair. He was a brave soldier, an excellent citizen, an honest and trustworthy man. There are many friends in the two counties who will regret his death and sympathize with the sorrowing wife and children. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, and were conducted by Rev. Thos. Osborn.

DEATHS.

Archibald FRESHWATER.

Archibald FRESHWATER was a native of Pennsylvania, born December 19, 1839, the son of Wm. and Sarah FRESHWATER. He grew to manhood in the east, coming to Iowa in 1855, and enlisted in the 19th Iowa Infantry, but owing to physical disabilities was rejected. Later he enlisted in Co. H, 3rd Iowa cavalry, and remained in service more than a year, or until the close of the war.

In September, 1865, he was united in marriage to Emily Jane STINE. The wife, four sons and one daughter survive him.

For the past seven years deceased was in poor health. Last Wednesday he suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he never rallied and was released from his sufferings by death the same night.

Funeral services were conducted from the home Friday afternoon in charge of Rev. Thos. Osborn, and interment made in Evergreen cemetery.
