Death of Mr. FREEMAN.

John D. FREEMAN, whose serious illness The Ledger has heretofore noted, died at his home in this city Thursday evening. He had been in ill health, a sufferer from bright's disease, for a long time past, but was confined to his bed only a few weeks. He was in his eightieth year. Deceased was born and grew to manhood in South Orange, N. J. He was married there, in 1843, to Julia A. TUCKER, who survives him. The family came to Iowa in 1863, resided in Wapello county for two years, and then removed to this city. In all the intervening years Mr. FREEMAN has been in business here, and his life, until a short time ago, was one of ceaseless industry. There were no limits to his hours of labor, nor did he ever seem to show fatigue. Quiet and reticent in his manner, he made little effort to extend the boundaries of his acquaintance, but those who learned to know the man honored and esteemed him. He was honest and upright in his dealings with his fellows, a kind husband and father, a good citizen, a faithful friend. Mr. FREEMAN was the father of eight children, seven of whom are now living and were present at his burial. Two sons, Eugene and Charles R., live at Paola, Kan., the other children, Mrs. G. W. TOWNLEY, Miss May, Henry, George H. and Frank S. FREEEMAN (sic), in this city. The remains were interred in the Evergreen cemetery Saturday afternoon, Rev. A. F. Marsh of the Congregational church conducting the funeral services.

Death of J. D. FREEMAN.

John D. FREEMAN, a resident of this city for almost thirty years, died at his home in the northwest part of town, Thursday evening of last week, at 6:50 o'clock, from a complication of diseases(.)

Deceased was born in South Orange, N. J., April 20, 1815, and was therefore seventy-nine years and twenty days old. He was reared to manhood in his native state, and in his youth learned the trade of a tailor. In 1843 he was united in marriage with Miss Julia A. TUCKER, of the same city, where they continued to make their home until the year 1863, when they removed to Iowa. On their arrival they located on a farm near Old Ashland, in Wapello county. There they lived for two years, coming to this city in the spring of 1866. Eight children were born to them, one dying in infancy. The surviving children are, Eugene and Chas. R., of Paola, Kansas; Mrs. G. W. TOWNLEY, George, Frank, Miss Mary E. and H. W., all of this city, and all of whom were present at the funeral. Mrs. FREEMAN died in this city a little over ten years ago, since which time Mr. FREEMAN's daughter, Miss Mary, has kept house for him.

Mr. FREEMAN served two terms as a member of the legislature of his native state, somewhere about 1860, having been elected on the democratic ticket, and to which party he continued to give his adherence until his death. He was a quiet man, making but few acquaintances, and devoting himself with constant faithfulness to his business. Year after year he could be found early and late at his shop, losing absolutely no time whatever, an example of faithful attention to duty which is seldom seen. He was a good citizen, having the highest respect of his neighbors, and was recognized by everyone as a man of honor and character. He raised a large family of children, all of whom are a credit to his watchful care and excellent example.

The funeral was held at the family residence, Saturday afternoon at three o'clock, Rev. Mr. Marsh conducting the services.
