DR. T. E. FARISS, NOW ALMOST 91, PASSES AWAY
Well Known Fairfield Man Died Last Night At Hospital

Dr. Thomas E. FARISS, now nearly 91 years of age, died last night at the Jefferson county hospital. Death came at 10:30 p.m. from complications incident to old age, he having been in fairly good health until recently.

Dr. FARISS was well known in Fairfield and vicinity. He was the son of T. E. FARISS, Sr. and his wife, Mary E. MAGEE and was born in Mt. Pleasant Jan. 1, 1846. He had been a resident of Fairfield for about 50 years and had been a practicing physician in Lockridge and Mount Pleasant.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock from the Hoskins Funeral Home and will be in charge of Dr. M. A. Gable, pastor of the First Methodist church. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.

He is survived by three chidlren, Mrs. E. H. MONTGOMERY, of Fairfield; Mrs. J. P. WILSON of Chicago; and B. E. FARISS of Sacramento, Calif. There are two grandchildren, Paul MONTGOMERY, Dallas, Texas and Camille MONTGOMERY of Normal, Ill.

New Years Day 1936 was his 90th birthday and on that anniversary, as previously, he held open house, entertaining his friends and receiving many gifts and greetings from old and younger friends. Even on his last anniversary when he was 90 he remained in good health of body and mind, appearing like a man 20 years his junior. Later during this present year his strength has failed and at different times he has been at the Jefferson County hospital for medical treatment.

Dr. FARISS was educated in the public schools of Mt. Pleasant after which he entered what was then the Iowa Wesleyan University. There he took his pre-medical work, receiving a degree of bachelor of medicine and chemistry, in 1872. The following year he was a member of the faculty, teaching chemistry. He then entered the Missouri Medical College at St. Louis, Mo., from which he was graduated with the M. D. degree, in 1875.

In later life he joined the First Methodist church and has been an active and faithful member. He has been a worker in the Brotherhood Bible Class and for the last 22 years he has been the treasurer of that class, while other officers came and went. As long as he was able to come to the class he attended to the duties of his office with scrupulous care. Although unable to attend recently, the class has continued its 90-year-old member in that place. Being the oldest member and regular attendant, the Sunday school honored him on his last birthday.

Dr. FARISS moved to Fairfield in 1882 and has resided here ever since. As a pastime he took up gardening and flower culture and in later years he employed most of his time as a florist, in which line he became very proficient.
