OttumwaGlenn J. HUPP, 94, of Ottumwa, departed this life on February 23, 2022, at The Lodge at Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa.
He was born August 25, 1927, in Ottumwa, to John R. and Mabel CARLSON HUPP.
A 1945 graduate of Libertyville High School, he was Valedictorian of his class and lettered in baseball and basketball. He was point guard on the 1943-1944 basketball team that won the Jefferson County championship. While still in high school, he was invited to try out for both the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals, but did not make the trip to the big cities due to his young age. After high school, he played short stop in various town teams in the area and also was a high school umpire and referee.
He married his high school sweetheart, Inez SHEETS on May 1, 1949 near Bladensburg. They farmed near Libertyville and Ottumwa. She died April 29, 1996. Glenn loved farming and raising cattle and also sold DeKalb and McCubbin seed for many years. In 1994 he achieved the Pioneer 200 Bushel Club with producer Don Dailey and in 2010 was name (sic) the Wapello County Soil and Water Conservation District Award winner with producer Mark Jacobs. In 2017 he enjoyed going to the Iowa State Fair to receive recognition for reaching Century Farm status.
Glenn always enjoyed sports and was a life long Cubs fan and got his wish when they became national champions in 2016. He also enjoyed playing cards, bingo, rummikub and doing crossword and sudoku puzzles. He was a member of the Bladensburg Christian Church and loved living at the Lodge and being with his many friends there.
He is survived by his daughter, Marcia and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a brother, Raymond; and sister, Doris HUPP TOTEMEIER.
Visitation will be open from 10 a.m.to 6 p.m. Sunday, February 27th at the Reece Funeral Home with the family present to greet friends from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, February 28th at Bladensburg Christian Church with Larry Smith officiating. For those unable to attend, the service may be viewed on the Reece Funeral Home Facebook page. Burial will be in Batavia Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa or the Bladensburg Christian Church.
