... Wm. ELLIOTT, a well known resident of this city, was found lying in the road in an unconscious condition Monday afternoon, on the hill across Cedar near the Birmingham bridge. He was brought home that evening, and has recovered somewhat at this time. Mr. ELLIOTT had started to his farm in a buggy, and finding the roads so bad he unhitched his horse and was riding it to town. He knew nothing further until he regained consciousness at the home of Nathaniel Crawford, whither he had been carried. ...

Wm. ELLIOTT, one of Fairfield's oldest residents, was found lying in the road on Cedar hill Monday forenoon in an insensible condition. He was removed at once to the residence of Nathaniel Crawford and later in the day was brought to his home in this city. He was unconscious for some time and death was expected. He is better today, however, and hopes are entertained for his recovery. He had left home in fairly good health Monday morning, though his health had been failing for a week or more.

Death of William ELLIOTT.

William ELLIOTT, whose serious illness The Ledger has heretofore noted, died at his home in this city early this morning. On the 1st inst., while returning from the country, he was taken violently ill, fell from his horse and was found in an unconscious condition by the roadside. His disease was an affectation of the brain, and although he partially regained consciousness during his illness there never appeared to be any hope for his recovery. Mr. ELLIOTT was born in Muskingum county, Ohio, October 10th, 1817, where he grew to manhood and was married. His wife died there, and later, in Pennsylvania, he was married to Miss Susan F. CALDWELL, who survives him. Three or four children were born to them, all of whom died at an early age with one exception, Mrs. Ed. MOSS of this city. Mr. and Mrs. ELLIOTT came to Iowa early in the '40's, and located on the farm in the southern part of this county which still belongs to the estate.

A few years later he began the sale of agricultural machinery, in connection with his farm work, established offices and warehouses at Birmingham and built up an extensive business. W. E. Thompson was admitted to the firm, and the implement house of Elliott & Thompson was soon known all over southern Iowa. In 1871 the business was transferred to this city, both partners removing here. They continued together until 1885, when financial reverses with which Mr. ELLIOTT met, together with his advancing years, induced the senior member to retire from active business life. Since that time he had devoted his attention to his farm, with an energy and industry worthy a younger man, and it is pleasing to note that his efforts met with substantial reward.

From early manhood Mr. ELLIOTT had been a member of the Presbyterian church, and both here and at Birmingham bore a prominent part in church matters. For several years he was a member of the board of trustees of Parsons College, and was, we believe, the first treasurer of that institution. Throughout all his life Mr. ELLIOTT was a deeply religious and most devout man. He obeyed the teaching of his creed to the letter as he saw them and no portion of his days was spent in idleness and frivolity. Stern as he appeared to many younger people, he had a kindness of heart and manner which those who knew him best learned to appreciate. He had many warm friends in Jefferson county, where he had lived so long, and their sympathies will go out to the stricken family in its affliction.

The funeral occurs tomorrow at 2 o'clock p.m., and services will be held at the Presbyterian church.

Death of William ELLIOTT.

At two o'clock this morning occurred the death of Wm. ELLIOTT, of this city. It had not been expected that he could recover since his attack of two weeks ago, and for several days his death was seen to be very near. Mr. ELLIOTT was an old man and for several years had been growing feeble. He was born in 1817, and had been a resident of Fairfield twenty-one years. Prior to coming here he had lived near Birmingham for many years. He was a conspicuous citizen, very earnest in his church, and acknowledged by everybody to be an earnest and devoted christian. The funeral will take place from the Presbyterian church Thursday afternoon at two o'clock.
