Pvt. Virgil Keith ELLIOTT, paratrooper with the 101st U. S. army airborne troops, was killed in action in Holland, October 7, according to an official telegram from the war department received last evening by his wife, who resides with their one-year-old daughter, Mary Louise, in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence ELLIOTT, 806 W. Washington St. The wire stated a letter would follow. Mrs. ELLIOTT is the former Louise BEECHER (sic - BUCHER) of Libertyville.
In Mrs. ELLIOTT's last letter from her husband, dated October 3, he told of having returned to his duties with the glider infantrymen and was in Holland, living in a fox hole. Pvt. ELLIOTT, in the D-Day invasion of France June 6, was severely wounded in the neck, arm, wrist and leg on June 7, when a hand grenade burst beside him. He was taken to a base hospital in England where he remained until around August 1 when he was assigned back to the lines.
Pvt. ELLIOTT, who left Jefferson county with the March 13, 1943 group, landed overseas around Oct. 17, 1943. Prior to his entrance in the service he was employed at Morrell's Packing Company in Ottumwa. He was sent to Camp Roberts, Calif. for a 13-weeks basic training from Camp Dodge, and on to Fort Bragg, N.C., for a month's glider training before going to his port of embarkation. The greater part of his actual glider training was done during the year after his arrival in England. He was graduated from the local high school with the class of '42.
Besides his wife and year-old daughter, Mary Louise, he is survived by his parents; a sister, Miss Marjorie ELLIOTT, instructor at Nichols, Ia., and a brother, Coxswain Glen ELLIOTT, with the coast guard somewhere in the South Pacific.

The body of Pvt. Virgil K. ELLIOTT, Fairfield soldier killed in action during World War II, has arrived at an east coast port and will be shipped to Fairfield for burial. He is the seventeenth of Jefferson county's war dead to be returned to the United States.
His body was among 2,918 war dead returned to this country about the U. S. Army Transport Haiti Victory.
Pvt. ELLIOTT was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarenct (sic) ELLIOTT, 805 West Broadway. His wife, the former Louise BUCHER of Libertyville, was remarried after her husband lost his life in action. She married her husband's elder brother, Glenn ELLIOTT and they now reside at Los Angeles, Calif.
She and Pvt. ELLIOTT's daughter, six year old Mary Louise, will return to Fairfield for the funeral services.
The Fairfield soldier was killed in action in Holland on October 7, 1944. The message concerning his death was received by relatives here on October 27.
Pvt. ELLIOTT was serving with the 101st Airborne Infantry when he was killed. He had been severly wounded on D-day, June 6, 1944, and spent two month (sic) in a hospital in England. He returned to action in August, 1944.
Virgil Keith ELLIOTT graduated from the Fairfield high school in 1942, and had been employed at the Morrell Packing company in Ottumwa before he entered the armed forces in March, 1943.
He received his early training at Camp Roberts, Cal., and Ft. Bragg, N. C. He went overseas in October, 1943.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence ELLIOTT; his former wife, Mrs. Glenn ELLIOTT; a daughter, Mary Louise; his brother Glenn; and a sister, Mrs. J. W. McVICAR, Shell Beech, Cal.

Front Page, Column 3FUNERAL FOR WAR VET WILL BE SATURDAY
Last rites will be held Saturday for Pvt. Virgil Keith ELLIOTT, the 17th of Jefferson county's war dead returned to the United States for burial.
The services will be at 3 p.m. at the Hoskins funeral home with Elder Roger Holly of the Burlington Adventist church in charge. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.
The body is scheduled to arrive at 12:50 a. m. Friday with a military escort. The flag-draped casket will be taken to the funeral home where it will remain until time for the services the next day. The Legion and VFW Posts will have charge of the military services.
