Sophia M. DOUGLAS

Sophia M. DOUGLAS, 74, 1103 E. Briggs Ave., died early Sunday, Dec. 24, 1989, at her home.

The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church with the Rev. William Sullivan officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Prayers for a Christian Wake will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Raymond Funeral Home. The Rosary will be recited by Altar and Rosary Society at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to Mass Stipends.

Mrs. DOUGLAS was born April 2, 1915, at the family home near Birmingham, the daughter of John Bernard and Caroline Gertrude GLANZMAN ROACH. She grew up in rural Birmingham, graduated from Pleasant Plain High School, and worked in Chicago before her marriage to Julian "Jack" DOUGLAS Oct. 26, 1942, in Chicago. They lived in South Carolina and Memphis, Tenn., before moving to Fairfield in 1962. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and Altar and Rosary Society. She taught ceramics and had won numerous awards for her ceramic work.

Surviving are a brother, Maurice ROACH of Fairfield, several nieces and nephews. Her husband died in March 1973. Her parents, two brothers, Lawrence ROACH and Bernard ROACH, also preceded her in death.
