Death of R. A. DOUGHERTY.

Tuesday morning at half past ten o'clock occured the death of Mr. R. A. DOUGHERTY, at his home in Cedar township, east of fown. Mr. DOUGHERTY had been sick since the middle of June, caused by an abcess of the liver. An operation was performed a short time ago, and it was thought that by this means his life could be spared; but he gradually grew weaker and finally succumbed to death. Mr. DOUGHERTY was born in West Middletown, Washington county, Pa., March 16, 1821, and is of Irish-Scotch (sic) descent. When but a lad of fourteen years, he began to make his own way in the world, farming on the shares with his uncle. In 1840 he came to this country and purchased a quarter section of land, the place of his late residence. He was united in marriage Sept. 24, 1850, with Miss Elizabeth J. SIMPSON, who now survives him. Six children were the result of this union, only two of whom are now living, Milton S., recently engaged in the harness business in this city, and Mrs. W. A. WARWICK, of Cedar township. Mr. DOUGHERTY was highly respected by all who knew him, being an honorable and upright man. He served as a member of the board of supervisors for several years, and has held all the offices of his township. He was one of the oldest members of the I. O. O. F. Lodge, having been a member over thirty years; also belonged to the Old Settler's Association. Deceased was seventy-one years old. The funeral services were held this afternoon at one o'clock at the family residence, and were conducted by Rev. J. F. Magill. Death of Robert A. DOUGHERTY.

Robert A. DOUGHERTY, one of the early settlers of this county, died at his home in Cedar township, October 31st, aged 72 years, 6 months and 15 days. He had been in poor health for some years past, but death resulted from an internal tumor in the region of the stomach. The funeral occurred the 1st inst., and was largely attended by the friends from he city and from the neighborhood in which he resided. He had for a third of a century been a member of the fraternity of Odd Fellows, who attended in a body and conducted the last rites at the grave. His brother James lives in Bucyrus, Ohio, his brother Austin in Placerville, Idaho, and his sister Mrs. Elizabeth CALOHAN in Galliporis, Ohio.

Mr. DOUGHERTY was born in West Middletown, Washington county, Pa. At the age of 14 years he manifested much enterprise and begun to make his own way in the world, by honesty and hard work. In 1840 he came to Iowa and bought the farm where he ended his days. On the 24th of September, 1850, he was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth SIMPSON. They began life together in a cabin which he had built on the farm, and where six children were born to them. Only two of the children are now living, Milton S. and Mary E., wife of William WARWICK. These with their devoted mother were permitted to minister to the departed one in his long and severe suffering and to receive from his lips the assurance of his great appreciation of their love. Mr. DOUGHERTY was held in high esteem by his fellow citizens and the various offices to which he was so often elected gave evidence as to his integrity. His manner was quiet and his way straightforward. He was brought up under christian influences and was in sentiment a Presbyterian. He never united with the church, but ever regarded its communion with great reverence. In view of the approach of his death his hesitancy gave way, and he cheerfully avowed his sole reliance on the grace of God as set forth in the gospel of the Divine Son. A great company of the friends of this venerable man will sympathize with the bereaved ones in their sorrow. *
