An Old Citizen Gone.

John E. DOUGHERTY was born in Guernsey county, Ohio, October 29th, 1832, and died in Fairfield, Iowa, May 27th, 1897. Mr. DOUGHERTY came to Iowa in 1853, locating in Mt. Pleasant. He moved to Fairfield in 1861 and has since resided here. He was married January 1st, 1856, to Miss Amanda M. DAVIS. Four children were born of this union, of whom three are now living--Mrs. Eva L. BROWN, Harlan, Iowa, Mrs. Ida LaDUKE, Eskridge, Kansas, and W. H. DOUGHERTY, Chicago. His wife died here March 26th, 1875. He was married to Miss Mary E. PROBASCO, Mt. Pleasant, by whom he had two children--Mabel and Helen, both at home. Mr. DOUGHERTY was a member of the Methodist church for many years, and was well known to our people; but the hand of affliction fell upon him some years ago and he had not been as actively engaged in business as formerly, nor been able to associate with his fellowmen. For several years he has been afflicted with epilepsy. He had many friends and acquaintances who will extend the hand of sympathy to the bereaved wife and children. The funeral took place Sunday at 4 o'clock p.m. Rev. J. A. Boatman, assisted by Rev. M. L. Melick, conducted the funeral services. The remains were interred in the Evergreen cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. W. H. DOUGHERTY, Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. Ed. PROBASCO, Kansas City, Mrs. A. G. MORRIS, Trenton, Ia., and other relatives were in attendance at the funeral.

Death of Mr. John E. DOUGHERTY.

Last Thursday occurred the death of John E. DOUGHERTY at his home in the southwestern part of the city, of acute inflammation of the brain. Mr. DOUGHERTY has been a sufferer from apoplexy for the past fifteen years and his last illness was of less than two weeks' duration. The funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon at two o'clock, Rev. J. A. Boatman and Rev. M. L. Melick officiating.

Mr. DOUGHERTY was born in Gurney county, Ohio, in 1832, and came to Iowa in 1854, making his home in Mt. Pleasant. He was there married a year afterward to Amanda DAVIS and to them four children were born, three of whom survive him. His home has been in this city for the past thirty-five years and it was here that his wife died March 26, 1875. For a number of years he was a marble cutter and afterwards followed the insurance business, but of late years his health has been failing and has made him unable to follow any business.

He was married for the second time to Mary E. BARBOSCO (sic) at Mt. Pleasant, July 4, 1876, who is left with her two daughters and his three other children to mourn their loss. Three of the children were present at the time of his death. The sympathy of the community is given to them and his bereaved wife.
