Bondurant

James "Jim" Owen SCHEELER, 63, passed away Monday, Aug. 23, 2021, at MercyOne Hospice in Johnston (note: in Polk Co., IA). He was born Nov. 10, 1957, to Donald "Doc" and Alice (DIMON) SCHEELER in Fairfield, Iowa, and was raised on the family farm in Brighton, Iowa. He graduated from Washington High School in 1976. After graduation, he moved to the Des Moines area to attend Lincoln Tech. Upon completion of Lincoln Tech, he went to work for Swift where he met his wife, Vicki NUZUM. To this union two sons, James "Mitch" and Alexander "Alex," were born. Jim and Vickie later divorced.

Jim was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan and collector of coins and NASCAR memorabilia. He loved watching a good cattle show. He was deemed fire chief of Hooterville for their annual Hooterville Howling. Jim and Alex bought and rebuilt a 1968 red Camaro. Two of his favorite memories were the trip to Bristol, Tenn., for a NASCAR race and to Yellowstone to see the buffalo with his sons. His grandson Brighton was the light of his life.

He loved farming and being outdoors which made him love his job at the Co-Op in Altoona. He worked there for 16 years before retiring due to his battle with colon cancer.

Jim is survived by his two sons, Mitch (Stefani) and Alex SCHEELER; one grandson, Brighton SCHEELER; his brother, Gary SCHEELER; sister, Linda (John) COLBERT; nieces, Whitney SCHEELER, Erin LEYDEN and Lori LONG; and many great-nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Thomas "Tom" SCHEELER; and grandparents, Myrtle SCHEELER, and Blanche and Harrison DIMON.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2021, at Hamilton's Altoona Funeral Home, 105 Fourth St. SW, Altoona, with interment to follow at Altoona Cemetery (note: in Polk Co., IA). Family will greet friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m., also at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Clay County Township or MercyOne Hospice in loving memory of Jim.
