DIMMITT dies at Iowa City hospital

The death of James DIMMITT Friday in Iowa City creates a vacancy on the Fairfield City Council.

Mayor Robert Rasmussen said he would plan to make an appointment to fill the 5th-Ward seat unless a sufficient number of residents of the ward petition for a special election.

DIMMITT was retired as a veteran lineman with Iowa Electric Light and Power Co. when he was appointed to the council by Rasmussen in January 1991 to fill a vacancy. He was required to run for election that next November. He won the contest over contender Lee Dimmitt. The men were not related.

Any mayoral appointment to fill the new vacancy would be through 1995.

When he appointed DIMMITT to the council, Rasmussen said that "Jim DIMMITT is a gentleman who has lived in Fairfield all his life. I think he is a free thinker. He's fair. I think he's willing to look at all issues."

Today, Rasmussen noted that "Jim was a very dedicated City Council member. He had the time time and devoted a great deal of it to the city. We will miss his leadership, particluarly in the streets and transportation area, of which he was chairman.

DIMMITT also was mayor pro tempore and had presided at the most recent council meeting Aug. 8.

He was reported to have died after undergoing testing at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City for treatment of a heart condition.
