Benjamin Franklin COX died in this city Thursday afternoon, after many years of suffering from wounds and disease contracted in the army. When eighteen years of age he enlisted in Company F, Eighth Iowa infantry, for three years. At the battle of Shiloh, on Sunday morning, he was shot in the right hand, and the wound caused him constant pain and suffering until the day of his death. He was discharged for disability after a year's service. Mr. COX was married to Martha J. TEMPLE, who survives him, April 3d, 1863. They were the parents of three children, only one of whom is now living, Mrs. Bert SNOOK of this city. He was born in Monroe county, O., June 17th, 1844, spent the earlier years of his life in Washington county, Penn., and came to this state with his parents when a lad of seven years. He came to this city in 1869, and had resided here continuously since that time. Mr. COX had a splendid record as a soldier and was an excellent citizen. He was honest, industrious and thrifty, and, in spite of his disability, was able to provide for himself and family in advancing years. He had many friends among his old comrades in this vicinity, and those who knew him as a neighbor and citizen had great respect for him. Funeral services were held Saturday, conducted by Rev. L. Mendenhall. Mr. COX wa a member of George Strong post, G. A. R., and his old comrades had charge of the service at the grave.
