Front Page, Column 5DENNIS COLLINS TAKES OWN LIFE
He Had Been Ill For Months And Had Grown Despondent As A ResultDennis C. COLLINS, 106 Iowa avenue, well known as a traveling drug salesman over the state, took his own life early this morning as a result of depsondency following an illness of five months.
His condition had been such several weeks ago that his family had worried lest he might take such a step, but in the last few days he had improved and seemed much more cheerful. Last night he went calling with Mrs. COLLINS, spending some time at the home of his daughter, Mrs. L. M. FRYER, 105 Wilson boulevard, and with his brother, Mel R. COLLINS, 120 West Burlington street. He returned home and retired early, evidently in good spirits. About 6 oclock this morning, Mrs. COLLINS awoke and, missing him, called Miss Nina Newberry, a Parsons college student who had been making her home there, and the two made a search for him, finding him hanging in the coal room in the basement. He had used a slender rope, placed a wooden box on a lump of coal and then kicked the box from under him. It was thought by coroner G. K. Dunkel that he had been dead two hours.
Funeral arrangements are pending the receipt of word from two sons, Capt. Carter COLLINS of the U. S. Army and Quinlin COLLINS, a student at the University of Hawaii, both of Honolulu. Capt. COLLINS has been in Hawaii for three years and was due for a transfer to the states and had fixed June 12 as the date of his sailing. His brother was to have come with him.
Mr. COLLINS was born near Salina October 27, 1869 and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Waltus COLLINS, well known citizens of the county. He gained his education in the rural and Fairfield schools and was graduated from the pharmacy school of Northwestern university in Chicago when he was 21 years old. He went to Packwood and was in the drug business there for three years, coming to Fairfield and engaging in the same business here for six years. Since then he has been a salesman for several wholesale drug houses, his last lonnection (sic) being with Foley & Company of Chicago.
He married Miss Gertrude R. COWEN of near Packwood March 1, 1893. She and three children--Capt Carter COLLINS and Quinlin COLLINS and Mrs. L. M. FRYER, survive. Another son, Richard, 11 years old, met death in a train accident here about six years ago.
Four brothers are living--Ira COLLINS of Los Angeles, M. R. COLLINS of Fairfield, Grant M. COLLINS of San diego, Calif., and Ernest C. COLLINS of Malvern. The late Mrs. Alonzo GREEN of Fairfield and the late Mrs. Emma CHESTER of Kansas city were his sisters.
Mr. COLLINS was a Mason and a member of the christian church, being an active worker in the latter and devoted to its interest.

A cablegram from the two sons, Captain Carter COLLINS and Quinlin COLLINS of Honolulu, today brought the news that all steamships from that port for the United States were booked up to the limit for weeks to come and that no army transport would leave for several weeks. They expect to arrive in this country the last of June as the soonest possible date.
Ernest C. COLLINS, a brother, will arrive tonight from his home in Malvern, but a telegram from Ira COLLINS, another brother, at San Diego, Calif., said it would be impossible for him to come.
