June 16, 2005LaVerne L. Muhs, 75, of 12852 Nova Ave., Birmingham, died Wednesday, June 15, 2005, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
The funeral is scheduled at 2 p.m. Sunday at Birmingham United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Renken officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
Family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham.
Memorials may be made to the American Legion Log Cabin in Birmingham City Park.
Mr. Muhs was born Dec. 21, 1929, in Eldridge, the son of Amos and Clara Buttonknob Muhs. He married the late Wanda Coffin of Pleasant Plain in 1952. They had three boys and three girls.
He married Joan A. Newman of St. Paul, Minn., in 1967.
He attended country school in Scott County. As a boy he worked on the family farm.
When he was 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and fought in the Korean War. He was wounded, but returned to the battlefield a few months later and was wounded a second time. He received two Purple Hearts during his service.
After the military, he attended Parsons College for two years.
He married the late Wanda Coffin of Pleasant Plain in 1952. They had three boys and three girls.
He married Joan A. Newman of St. Paul, Minn., in 1967.
He spent his life farming. He invested in land and improved his property by adding ponds and plating trees. He continually tried to improve wildlife habitat on his land.
He was an avid outdoorsman and watched for waterfowl, turkeys and other wild game. He hunted, wrote stories and things down in his notebook.
He was a member of Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Haney-Brannan Post 181, Farm Bureau and Birmingham United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Joan; three sons, Steve Muhs and wife Sheryl of Stockport, Jeff Muhs and wife Martha of Stockport, Denver Muhs and wife Lisa of Sharpesville, Ind.; three daughters, Debbie Carruthers and husband Ray of Birmingham, Becky Blair and husband Kelly of Dayton, Iowa, and Jacque Nyenhuis and husband Dave of Gladstone, Minn., and Cindy Kaim and husband Harold of Clinton; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Norman and Harold Muhs; and one sister, Arlene Kuhl.
