MRS. E. CLARKE DIES FRIDAY IN CALIFORNIA
Funeral Services At 2 p.m. Wednesday at Murray Funeral Home

Mrs. Etta M. CLARKE, 83, life-long resident of this city, passed away at Santa Ana, Calif., Friday night, according to a telegram received here today. She had been visiting her son C. W. CLARKE who is spending the winter in California.

Funeral services will be held in the Murray Fuenral Home, at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, in charge of Dr. Gilbert Voorhies.

Etta MONTGOMERY CLARKE, the daughter of William and Harriett RICHMOND MONTGOMERY, was born December 3, 1853, on the Montgomery farm, now the Ray Flinspach place, eight miles north and was of Fairfield, in the old Richwood community. The farm was bought by her father from the government in 1839. When a child of three, her father died and her mother and family moved to Fairfield, Mrs. CLARKE attended the old Axline Academy, which stood on the site of the present M. E. church, and the old Franklin school, now Howard Park site.

Mrs. CLARKE, early in life, united with the Presbyterian church which her uncle, Solomon MONTGOMERY, helped found in Fairfield. She was always a faithful and consistent attender of church when able to go. She was a great lover of the out-doors and loved to travel over Jefferson county, recalling many of the old landmarks and happenings of early Jefferson county history. Many of the early families of this county she knew and where they lived years ago. When a young lady she belonged to the old I. C. Club, the forerunner of Pi Beta Phi sorority. For years she has been an Eastern Star.

On May 22, 1879, she was united in marriage to George D. CLARKE, who owned the CLARKE Drug Store, now the Shriner and Johnson Drug Store. Mr. CLARKE passed away November 15, 1903. To this union were born Helen May CLARKE VOTE, a resident of Thermal, Calif., Charles W. CLARKE, 600 South Main street, Fairfield, and Ruth CLARKE WHITE of Oakland, Calif. Besides her three children, she is survived by six grandchildren, Robert VOTE, of Thermal, Calif., Harriett, Regina, and Sally CLARKE who are spending the winter in Santa Ana, Cal. and Patricia and Carol WHITE of Oakland, Calif.

Mrs. CLARKE is the last of her family. Her brothers, Isaac and John, and sisters, Jane and Mary, preceded her in death. Her family is one of the oldest in Jefferson county, having settled near Four Corners in 1838. Her father and grandfather came from County Down, Ireland. Her grandchildren are the fifth generation living in the county.
