FairfieldJon Kelly KIRKPATRICK passed away on December 11, 2020, at Sunnybrook Living Care Center in Fairfield, IA. As were his wishes his body has been cremated and he will return home to California. Friends may leave online condolences at www.cranstonfamilyfuneralhome.com.
Kelly, as he was known to most, was a 38-year practitioner of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's teaching of Transcendental Meditation. He was a Sidhi Program Devotee. "He heroically answered Maharishi's call to meditate in program to effect world Peace." He practiced Yogic Flying, was accomplished in his knowledge of Vedic Astrology and Sanskrit. In honor and respect for his dedication to the movement MIU allowed him to stay in a dorm room free of charge when his illness made him bedridden.
Kelly was known for his big personality, his physical accomplishments, his strong political and social view's (sic), and his tenacity. He spoke of a time when he went to the local quarry to get 4 tons of "Rock" the quarry instructed him where it was, not expecting him to load with without help of a frontend loader. He left 40 minutes later with 4 tons of rock on his flatbed truck, loaded by hand.
He used his strength and tenacity to help others also. "Once on a snowy early morning, he shoveled all the snow away before the lady's dome, even though he did not have to. So Sweet and Chevalier-like of him."
"Last year, when our sidewalk was a sheet of ice, Kelly and our friend Alex, used sledgehammers and hot water to break it all up. It was a task."
Kelly grew up in Pacifica, CA, went to High School, worked, went to Columbia Junior College in Columbia, CA. He moved to Fairfield, Iowa, 38 years ago, where he attended MIU and created a life for himself in Fairfield. He worked, made friends and did amazing and "legendary" things in the community. He rode to Program every day on his bicycle. Nothing prevented him from making Program. He rode in summer heat and humidity, winter snow and ice. Kelly's exploits are still talked about by his friends and fellow meditators.
Kelly is survived by his brother, Matthew (Carol) KIRKPATRICK of Pacifica, CA; a nephew, Dennis KIRKPATRICK; niece, Kimberly KIRKPATRICK; two great-nephews, Michael and Ethan KIRKPATRICK; a great-niece, Monica KIKRPATRICK and a great-great-niece, Charlotte KIRKPATRICK, as well as many extended family and friends.
