CHAPUIS MET DEATH IN CAR TRUCK MISHAP
Brother of Fairfield Man Will be Laid to Rest Here Sunday

An account of how Lee CHAPUIS met death in an accident at Michigan City, Indiana, has been received in Fairfield. CHAPUIS, who is a brother of Clay CHAPUIS of Fairfield was killed on October 17th.

The account in the Michigan City News states:

A head-on collision between a truck and an automobile ot (sic) 4:30 o'clock this morning on U. S. No. 12 one mile west of New Buffalo, Mich. resulted in the death of one man and serious injury to another. Two escaped with minor hurts.

The dead:

Lee CHAPUIS, 33 years, old, of Lansing, Mich. who died three hours later in the St. Anthony hospital. He suffered a skull fracture, fracture of the let (sic - left) jaw, injuries to the right eye and also cuts and bruises.

The most seriously inpured (sic) is George Oetman, 45 years old of Hamilton, Mich., who is confined to the clinic hospital with a severe fracture of the left elbow and cuts and bruises to the right hand. His condition is described as serious.

Howard Johnston, 20; Libertyville, Ia., sustained cuts to the forehead, injuries to his hands, and other minor cuts, while Silas Person, 25; of Lansing, was cut about the face and forehead. Both of these are confined to the St. Anthony hospital.

Oetman, who was traveling east on the highway in the truck is alleged to have fallen asleep and lost control of the machine which swerved to the left side of the highway and crashed practically head-on into the other car which was headed toward Michigan City enroute to the Century of Progress Exposition at Chicago.

Oetman was alone in the truck whole (sic) Johnston and Pearson accompanied CHAPUIS. The injured were brought to local hospitals in the Smith ambulance but CHAPUIS died without regaining consciousness. Little hope was held for his life at any time after the accident.

According to Deputy Sheriff Kuecra of New Buffalo, who investigated the collision, CHAPUIS had apparently attempted to avoid the accident by swerving off the highway but could not get out of the path of the speeding truck.

The entire left side of the automobile was torn while serious damage was done to the left side of the truck cab.

CHAPUIS' body was removed to the Smith Funeral Home in New Buffalo following his death.

Coroner B. E. Kohnczyk said today that no date for the inquest into CHAPIUS' (sic) death had been set, but indicated that it probably would not be held until Oetman is able to testify.

Funeral services for CHAPUIS will be held at the Campbell Funeral Home in Fairfield, Sunday at 2:00 o'clock in charge of Rev. S. P. Williamson. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.
