CORRESPONDENCE

Buchanan Township.

... Friday afternoon, July 16, E. K. CAVINESS quietly fell asleep, after an illness of only a few hours' duration. He being out as usual doing the morning chores when he suddenly was stricken with a stroke of apoplexy. All that medical aid, willing hands and loving hearts could do was to no avail, the hand of the grim messenger, Death, was laid upon him and he never regained consciousness, and passed out into that better land at four o'clock.

E. K. CAVINESS was the son of Esther and Kirby CAVINESS. He was born October 18, 1842, within one-half mile of his late home ,and spent his entire life in Jefferson county. He was married February 3, 1874, to Miss Elizabeth FISHER who is left to mourn his loss. They lived in Cedar township until 1890, when they moved to their present home. They were the parents of six children, all living. They are Mrs. Climmie KING of Blackhawk township, Mrs. Bessie LARSON of Monmouth, Ore.; Cleve and Emery of Chicago, and Manly of Fairfield. Thirteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild, Bobby KING, survive him. He was one of a large family of children, eleven in number, seven having preceded him in death. The surviving brothers and sisters are William of Laconia, John of Greenfield, Mrs. Mary SMITH of Des Moines, and Mrs. Rachel LONG of Mt. Ayr.

Mr. CAVINESS was strictly a home man, honest and upright, a kind husband and a loving father and an excellent neighbor, has gone from among us and his death reveals the fact to us more vividly that "in the midst of life we are in death."

Much sympathy is extended to the bereaved ones.

The last services were held Sunday at 4 p.m. at the M. E. church in Fairfield. The many beautiful flowers showed the esteem in which he was held. He was laid to rest in the Evergreen cemetery.
