Mrs. Matilda CARLSON

Matilda ANDERSON was born in Sweden on February 22, 1864. While yet a young lady, she bade farewell to her parents, sisters, friends and relatives, and with a brave heart and courageous nature, she turned her steps toward America, where one of her brothers had emigrated before her.

We can only conjecture of the homesickness and heartaches that she endured until she became acquainted with the English language, and won many friends in America.

In early girlhood she met Andrew CARLSON, who wooed and won her and on August 3, 1889, they were united in marriage at Oskaloosa, and lived a happy wedded life until death.

Seven children were the fruit of this union, Lawrence and Homer dying in early childhood. Those surviving are Roy and Ralph at home, H. H. CARLSON of Waverly, Miss Ellen CARLSON of Des Moines, and Mrs. Mabel HUPP of Libertyville, Iowa, who have all been a comfort to her in her declining years. Four grandchildren, Glen and Donna May CARLSON, Glen and Raymond HUPP. Two sister in Sweden, two brothers, Charles ANDERSON of Gillispie, Ill., and John ANDERSON of Kansas City, Mo. One sister, Christine JOHNSON of Des Moines, passed away.

For the past two years she had been in failing health, but only critically ill for one week, when she was taken to the Jefferson county hospital, where all was done that could be. She died October 19, 1934.

Mrs. CARLSON had spent the past 28 years in Jefferson county where her neighbors and friends are legion, her home being at 803 West Gear street where she will be sadly missed by all.

In early girlhood she united with the Swedish Methodist church and she lived true to its teachings.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at Hoskins funeral home, Dr. U. S. Smith of the Methodist church conducted the services. Mrs. Frank Pierson and Mrs. Arthur F. Greef sand "Abide With Me" and They Never Say Goodbye in Heaven."

The pallbearers were Martin PETERSON, Elmer PETERSON, D. W. PACKARD of Des Moines and Arthur ANDERSON, Ludwick JOHNSON of Albia and Glen GARRETT of Gillespie, Ill., all of whom were nephews.

ANDERSON, Mr. and Mrs. Glen GARRETT, Mrs. Gus CADELL of Gillespie, Ill.; Mr. Andrew PETERSON, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur ANDERSON, Mr and Mrs. Ludwick JOHNSON, Mr. and Mrs. LEWIS all of Albia, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. M. L. PETERSON, Elmer PETERSON, Della PETERSON, Mrs. Mike SNYDER, Mr. and Mrs. D. W. PACKARD, Miss Judith JOHNSON all of Des Moines, Iowa; Mrs. Dana SHEPARD of Ottumwa.
