Teen 'critical' after motorcycle accident

A Fairfield teenager was listed in critical condition at noon today at University Hospitals in Iowa City following a car-motorcycle accident at 3:57 p.m. Monday on West Taylor Avenue.

Lori Kay CARLSON, 18, of 901 W. Taylor Ave., was transferred to Iowa City by air care helicopter Monday evening after being transported by ground ambulance to Jefferson County Hospital.

The investigating officer said Miss CARLSON was a passenger on a motorcycle and was thrown approximately 35 feet onto street pavement and curbing.

The officer said Miss CARLSON, who wasn't wearing a helmet, suffered a skull fracture. She was bleeding and unconscious at the scene.

The driver of the 1983 Yamaha, Brian B. Beebe, 17, Route 2, also was thrown from the cycle. The policeman said he suffered a broken ankle. Beebe was transported to the hospital by ambulance then treated and released.

The policeman said the eastbound cycle collided with a westbound 1977 Buick driven by Amy C. Lauritsen, 16, Route 2. The car was attempting to turn into a driveway at 714 W. Taylor Ave., at the time the officer said.

Fairfield firemen were called to the scene at 4:17 p.m. to wash down gasoline that had spilled onto the street.

There was extensive damage to the motorcycle, which is registered to Rodger Kelley, Route 4, and $2,000 damage to the car.

The accident remains under investigation.
