YOUTH DIES ON CAMPUS WHILE SLIDING SUNDAY
Rixley CARL, Lincoln School Pupil, is Heart Attack Victim

Tragedy stalked through a merry coasting party on a Parsons college campus hill Sunday afternoon, to claim the life of Rixley CARL, 13-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Herschel CARL, 305 West Hempstead street. The lad dropped while at play in the snow and was pronounced dead a few seconds afterwards by the last of his coasting companions who reached his side.

County Coroner Roy A. McGuire, who arrived a few minutes later, having been summoned from his home close by, pronounced the death as due to a heart attack. Later, coroner McGuire said that there will be no inquest.

Rixley's death occurred a few minutes after 2:00 o'clock in the afternoon. Lads who were coasting with him on the hill east of the Parsons gymnasium said he had been with them for about twenty minutes, and apparently was in good health.

The lads reported that Rixley finished a slide down the hill, jumped to his feet, slung his sled onto his back, and fell face forward into the snow. The sled fell on his back.

Two boys ran to the home of William Turner, Parsons college custodian, at 807 North Main street, less than half a block away. Mr. Turner ran over to the fallen form, reaching it within a very short time after the fall. By that time the boy's face was blue and no signs of life could be deected (sic). The body was not moved until the Coroner arrived. Mr. CARL also arrived within a few minutes, Mr. Turner having gone for him in his auto.

After the Coroner had pronounced Rixley to be dead, the body was taken on the sled to the Turner home, from where it was removed a short time later to the Hoskins Funeral oHme (sic).

Among the lads who witnessed the tragedy were: Charles Dale and Francis Harwood, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Clay Harwood, 503 North Third street; Phillip Willson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Willson, 602 North Third street; Tom and Dick Slattery, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence A. Slattery, 307 West Stone street; Leland Weible, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Weible, 205 West Lowe street, and Paul Gorman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Gorman, 403 West Kirkwood street. A number of other lads, coasting west of the gymnasium, were on the scene very quickly.

Rixley was a member of the Lutheran Sunday School. He was in the 8th grade of the Lincoln school. He was well known and liked in this community. He is survived by his parents and by one brother, David, aged four. Rixley was born in Fairfield, on May 14, 1921. A number of other near relatives live in this community.

Funeral services for the youth will be held at 10:00 o'clock on Wednesday morning, from the Lutheran church, with Dr. W. F. Rex in charge.
