DEATH TAKES VET. ENGINEER
James C. BYRON, Retired, Saw Long Service on Burlington Route

James C. BYRON, 86, veteran retired Burlington Route locomotive engineer, died at 11 o'clock this morning at his home, 712 N. Fifth street, following an illness of several weeks.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Paul Catholic church, of which Mr. BYRON had been a faithful member during his almost 70 years of residence here. Interment will be in Fairfield, Ia. The body of Mr. BYRON was taken to his home from Prugh's chapel this afternoon.

Long Rail Service

Mr. BYRON, native of Ireland, came to this country and directly to Burlington when a youth of 17 years, when he obtained employment in the locomotive department of the Burlington Route as a fireman. It was not long until he was advanced to the position of engineer, first in the freight department, later on passenger trains.

A Reliable Engineer

For years he was counted one of the most reliable of the road's enginemen, serving on the best and fastest of trains, until he retired. His carefulness and attention to his duties made his record singularly free from accidents and he was deservedly popular with his fellow employes and men higher up on the railroad.

The death of Mr. BYRON removes one of the few surviving human connecting links of the old B. & M. road and the present day Burlington Route. His career from the days of wood burning locomotives to the modern Diesels covered a remarkable period of railroad expansion and transportation improvement.

K. C. Charter Member

Over 55 years ago, Mr. BYRON was united in marriage with Joanna McNAMARA, who died on May 16 of this year. Surviving is a daughter, Mrs. T. Paul McGANNON of Burlington. He was a fourth degree and charter member of Burlington Council 568, Knights of Columbus, who will recite the rosary at the family home Thursday evening at 7:30 o'clock. He also was a member of the Railway Veterans association.
