MRS. S. C. (sic - C. S.) BYRKIT STRUCK BY CAR
Injuries Proved Fatal To Former Well Known Resident Of This City

DES MOINES, Ia., June 6--Mrs. C. S. BYRKIT was taken to Broadlawns General hospital in a serious condition Saturday afternoon after she was struck by an automobile driven by Charles S. Johnson, 3136 East Twenty-fourth street, at East Fourteenth street and Grand avenue. She died at 12:30 a.m. yesterday morning at the hospital.

Mrs. BYRKIT was crossing the intersection when the car driven by Johnson, who according to police was speednig (sic), struck her. The brakes on Johnson's car were defective, police records show.

The woman was the wife of the former deputy state insurance commissioner.

Funeral services will be held at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow at the home. Burial will be held in Fairfield, Ia., Wednesday afternoon.

Besides her husband Mrs. BYRKIT is survived by one daughter, Mrs. A. B. PRAY of Des Moines, and two sons, R. J. BYRKIT of Des Moines and H. D. BYRKIT of Peoria, Ill.

Mrs. BYRKIT was formerly Elizabeth SHAFFER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William SHAFFER of this city and upon marrying Mr. BYRKIT moved from here to Centerville thence to Des Moines. She was about 76 years old. Mrs. W. E. JOHNSON of this city is a sister of Mrs. BYRKIT and left early Sunday morning for Des Moines.

Mrs. Mattie S. JUNKIN who is now with her daughter, Mrs. Willis KNIGHT in New York City is also a sister and one brother W. A. SHAFFER of Wayland survives.

TO HOLD YOUTH FOR MANSLAUGHTER FOR KILLING MRS. BYRKIT

DES MOINES, Ia., June 7--Charles S. Johnson, 22, Drake university student, must face a technical charge of manslaughter in municipal court as a result of the death Sunday of Mrs. C. S. BYRKIT, 80, who was killed when struck by Johnson's automobile. Police traffic officials preferred the charge to which Johnson pleaded not guilty yesterday and was released on $500 bond, preliminary trial was set for June 15.

Johnson attributed the accident to faulty brakes.

MRS. BYRKIT TO BE BURIED HERE
Short Services At The Grave In Charge of Rev. H. E. Butler, Wednesday

Funeral services for Mrs. C. S. BYRKIT who was struck down by an automobile Saturday evening in Des Moines and who passed away later in a Des Moines hospital will be held Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 oclock from the home.

The body will then be brought to this city, arriving at 12:32 oclock Wednesday and will be taken to Evergreen cemetery where short services will be held in charge of Rev. H. E. Butler and interment made.

FUNERAL RITES AND BURIAL OF MRS. BYRKIT HELD HERE TODAY

Short services were held at Evergreen cemetery this morning for Mrs. C. S. BYRKIT, who was struck down and killed by a car in Des Moines Saturday evening. Funeral rites were held from the home in Des Moines yesterday afternoon at 4:30 oclock and the body was brought to this city arriving at 12:32. The funeral party went directly to the cemetery where Rev. H. E. Butler was in charge.

RELIEVE YOUTH OF ALL BLAME
Coroner's Jury Decides Accidental Death of Mrs. BYRKIT Unavoidable

DES MOINES, June 10 (UP) -- A coroner's jury here today found unavoidable the accident in which Mrs. C. S. BYRKIT, 78 years old, was fatally injured. She was struck by a car driven by Charles Johnson, 22 years old, as she was crossing a street.

Mrs. BYRKIT was a former resident of this city and her body was brought here Wednesday and burial made in Evergreen cemetery.

Drop Manslaughter Charges Against Johnson

Des Moines, July 8( U. P.)--Manslaughter charges against Charles S. Johnson, 22, were dropped when testimony of witnesses at his hearing before Municipal Judge Frank Halligan failed to show negligence of his part in the accident in which Mrs. C. S. BYRKIT, 75, was killed. The woman was run over on June 4 by a car driven by Johnson.
