June 01, 2005Shirley LaVon Gordon, 71, of Brighton, died at 10:20 p.m. Monday, May 30, 2005, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a brief illness.
The funeral is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Church of God in Brighton, with the Rev. Rich Boyd and Rick Hughes officiating. Burial in Hillcrest Cemetery will follow cremation.
Open visitation will begin at 3 p.m. with the family present from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Gould Funeral Home in Brighton.
Memorials have been established to the Heart Association or the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
Mrs. Gordon was born Dec. 14, 1933, in Ottumwa, the daughter of Joseph O. and Ruth E. Volger Smith. She married Murray Douglas Gordon July 17, 1958, in Reno, Nev. He died June 1, 1986.
She grew up in Coppock and attended Coppock schools and Wayland High School.
She enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and traveled extensively, including Japan, the Philippines, New Jersey, California, Colorado and Ohio.
She retired to Ohio in 1973 and returned to Brighton in 1987.
She was a member of the Air Force Widows Association and an avid bowler.
She is survived by six brothers, Gary Smith of Fairfield, Jerry Smith of Washington, Dennie Smith of Washington, Jackie Smith of Washington, Rickiy Smith of Washington and Tim Smith of Brighton; three sisters, Connie Shelangoski of Brighton, Peggy Ambrose of North Liberty and Nancy Kelly of Brighton.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.
