Front Page, Column 6Harvey L. BROWN Died Last Night
Well Known Business Man Seccumbs to an Attack of Asthma (sic)Many friends in this city were shocked this morning to learn of the death of H. L. BROWN which occurred last evening at 8 o'clock at his home at 120 East Burlington street. It was not generally known that his condition was so serious, although he had been in failing health for the past year. His death was due to asthma.
Harvey Louis (sic) BROWN was born near Mansfield, Ohio, on October 4th, 1847, and grew to young manhood there,. He was married to Miss Margaret JORDAN and to them were born three children, the little daughter dying in infancy. Two sons, Clifford and Harold L., are surviving. Mrs. BROWN passed away just a year ago and since that time the husband has gradually and surely failed in health.
Mr. BROWN came to Iowa about thirty years ago and took up his residence in Fairfield. He immediately entered the business circles of the city and soon came to be recognized as a bright and energetic business man. About sixteen years ago Mr. BROWN established The Novelty Store, which is now owned by M. D. Rodabaugh. In 1903 Mr. BROWN was elected to the office of Treasurer of Jefferson county and served the people of the county faithfully in that office for five years. During his service in the Treasurer's office Mr. BROWN sold The Novelty Store.
At the end of his public service Mr. BROWN with B. B. Hughes purchased the hardware business on the east side of the square and has since been interested in that business. Owing to failing health he was forced to turn much of his business affairs over to his younger son Harold who assisted him in the store.
Mr. BROWN was of a quiet unassuming disposition and a man in whom the general public found a staunch friend. He was a member of the Congregational church and also a member of Clinton lodge No. 15, A. F. & A. M., and Gethsemane Commandry, Knights Templars of this city.
The funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at two o'clock at the residence and will be conducted by Rev. A. G. Graves, pastor of the Congregational church. Clinton lodge No. 15, A. F. & A. M., and of Gethesame Commamdry (sic) will attend the funeral in a body.
