William R. BRISTOW, whose service to the Fairfield community spanned more than half a century, died early today at the Jefferson County Hospital. He was 87.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Wayne Bartruff will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Wilson Hyde, a former local pastor.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Raymond Funeral Home.
A retired merchant, BRISTOW served as secretary of the Fairfield Lions Club continuously for 42 years. He was elected to a new term as treasurer on Tuesday. In 1960 he was awarded a life membership in Lions International.
BRISTOW was born March 31, 1892 in St. Joseph, Mo., the son of William and Mary Elizabeth WARD BRISTOW. He was reared on a farm in the Lake Darling area, graduating from Pleasant Plain Academy in 1913.
BRISTOW began his business career in Brighton, serving as manager of an elevator and feed store. He was a veteran of World War I, serving with the U.S. Army in France. He was married to Zora Mae ECK, who died in 1934.
BRISTOW moved from Brighton to Fairfield in 1925 when he joined the staff of the Hunt and Ireland Shoe Co. In 1930 he and Richard Warner organized their own retail shoe business and the partnership continued until 1954 when BRISTOW sold his interest in the store.
BRISTOW was married to Ruby WRIGHT in 1942. Surviving is his widow, one daughter, Brenda Lea TAYLOR, Indianapolis, Ind., and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
BRISTOW's membership in the Lions Club dates from 1934. He served as president of the club in 1936-37 and the following year he began his long tenure as secretary and treasurer. He also compiled a record of 42 years of perfect attendance at club meetings.
BRISTOW served as a director of the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce on several occasions. He was a member of the Fairfield Planning and Zoning commission from 1957 to 1967.
He also served on the County Extension Committee and the County Safety Council .He was (sic) a charter member of the Brighton Knights of Pythias and a 33-year member of the American Legion.

Members of the Fairfield Lions Club conducted a short memorial service at their Tuesday night meetings for Bill BRISTOW, longtime member of the organization who died recently.
The Rev. George Koch, pastor of the Free Methodist Church, opened the services with a poem concerning BRISTOW's many years in Lionism.
Jack Raymond gave a short history of BRISTOW's service including his 42 years as the club's secretary and the fact that BRISTOW was the first Fairfielder to receive a life membership in Lions.
Harold Booth spoke a few words concerning Bill's career in Fairfeild (sic) and in Lionism. The memorial was concluded with a prayer by Rev. Koch.
The program for the evening was a musical puppet show by Puppets Limited. The group was organized by Bob and Carol Hayes in 1978. Besides Mr. and Mrs. Hayes the cast includes young people from the community. Paul Heston served as master of ceremonies.
Funds were voted by the Lions Board of Directors for a skating party for the school patrol boys and girls.
