FORMER COUNTY SUPERVISOR DIES TODAY
John E. BOWERMASTER passes away at 85 years; born in Ohio

John Eldon BOWERMASTER, 85, former Jefferson county recorder and member of the board of supervisors, passed away at 2:15 a.m. today at his home, 604 West Monroe.

He is survived by three sons, Claude of Fairfield, Earl of Rock Island and Fred of Fairfied (sic); a step-daughter, Mrs. R. T. STEWART of Detroit, Mich., an adopted daughter, Mrs. Preston WELLS of Fairfield; a half-sister, Mrs. Nellie DOUGLAS of Fairfield, a half-brother, Homer of Independence, Kansas and 16 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was born in the state of Ohio on Feb. 21, 1854. He was Jefferson county recorder from 1907 to 1911 and afterwards a member of the board of supervisors. He was a member of the I. O. O. F. No. 4.

The body was taken to Hoskins Funeral Home. No funeral arrangements have been made as yet.

Mr. BOWERMASTER's first wife passed away Sept. 12, 1892. His second wife, Mary HIATT JONES, died April 9, 1927.

He sustained a slight heart attack January 9 at the Fred Lucas home where he had been staying for a while. On March 21 he had a severe attack but later rallied and came down town one day. On Tuesday, March 28, he was finally stricken with influenza and pneumonia set in to cause his death.

Since the death of his last wife he had made his home most of the time with his adopted daughter, Mrs. WELLS.

OBITUARY

JOHN E. BOWERMASTER

John Eldon BOWERMASTER was born Feb. 21, 1854, in Antioch, Clinton County, Ohio, the son of Frederic A. and Amanda P. BOWERMASTER. He left Ohio when a small child and lived in Henry County, Iowa for about five years. He came to Jefferson county when about 15 years of age and this had been his home ever since.

Mr. BOWERMASTER served as assessor of Fairfield township (now Center), from 1893 to 1897. He was Jefferson county recorder from 1907 to 1911 and a member of the Board of Supervisors from 1915 to 1918.

He was married to Miss Margaret GOW, Feb. 3, 1876. hSe (sic) passed away Sept. 12, 1892. Six children were born to this union -- Bert, Claude, Earl, Fred, Charles and Maude -- three of whom preceded him in death.

In October of 1893 he was married to Mary JONES, who, by former marriage had a daughter, Bessie, who is now Mrs. R. T. STEWART of Detroit, Mich. There is also an adopted daughter, Pauline, who is now Mrs. P. R. WELLS of Fairfield.

When a young man Mr. BOWERMASTER became a member of the Methodist church of which he remained a member until about four years ago when he changed his affiliation to the Christian church of this city and remained a member until his death.

Mr. BOWERMASTER passed away quietly at 85 years of age, Friday, March 31, 1939 at 604 West Monroe street, Fairfield.

Funeral services were held Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Hoskins Funeral Home. Interment was in Evergreen cemetery.
