B. F. BLACK
Benjamin Franklin, son of P. E. and Margaret BLACK, was born October 16, 1850, at Uniontown, Green county, Pennsylvania. He was 19 years of age when he came to Jefferson county, Iowa, with the thought of permanent settlement. The home was established six miles northwest of Fairfield and was maintained there until 1888 when the family moved to Fairfield.
In 1876 he was married to Janette WITHERSPOON and lived happily in this union until she passed away in April of 1929. Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. BLACK, all of whom survive by Mrs. Ralph STEVER, who passed away in 1927. The surviving children are Mrs. Bessie HOLLISTER of Fairfield, Mrs. Francis FALK of New York, Jessie BLACK of Douglas, Ariz., Eugene BLACK of New York. Mrs. Hazel THOMASSEN of Burlington and Kathryn LeGRANGE of Vinton, Ia. There are ten grandchildren and many relatives and friends.
Mr. BLACK was a member of the Methodist church, the Masonic Order, Oddfellows and the Knights of Pythias. He was very active in public life and for 20 years served on the Fairfield school board. He was sheriff of Jefferson county for six years, and chief of police for Fairfield for six years. His many friends regarded his leadership in favorable way and placed dependence upon his judgment and integrity.
Of pioneer stock and rugged constitution, Mr. BLACK was never sick until the latter months. Last Christmas he was taken ill and since then had gradually failed. Conscious till the last two days, he passed peacefully away on Wednesday morning, February 22, 1933, at 4:25 a.m.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. S. P. Williamson of the First Christian church at the Murray Funneral (sic) Home, on Thursday afternoon, the 23rd. The hymns "No Night There" and "Death Is Only A Dream," were sung by Mrs. W. M. Stever and Mrs. A. C. Johnson, Miss Reva Patten accompanying them. The remains were interred in Evergreen cemetery by the side of his wife.
