Chester R. BENTZ

FAIRFIELD--Chester R. BENTZ, 1001 South Fourth street, died in Ottumwa hospital, Ottumwa, at 11:45 p.m. Mar. 1 (note: in Wapello Co., IA). He was 60 years old and had been employed by the Iowa state highway commission for the past 35 years.

BENTZ was born at Roseland, Neb., on Feb. 4, 1895, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto BENTZ. He was graduated from the college of engineering of the University of Nebraska in 1920 and on Sept. 8 of that year was married to Marian L. ROBERTS at Kenesaw, Neb. The couple came to Fairfield from Chariton in July of 1953, and Mrs. BENTZ died Jan. 29, 1954. On Nov. 25, 1954, BENTZ was married to Katharin HOFFMAN at Leon. She survives, as do four sons: Chester R. BENTZ Jr., Winterset; Robert BENTZ, Orlando, Fla.; Richard BENTZ, USA, and James BENTZ, at home.

Also surviving are two grandsons, two sisters living in Pennsylvania and three stepchildren.

BENTZ was a member of First Methodist church, the Masonic lodge, the OES and the American Legion.

Last rites will be conducted at First Methodist church at 2 p.m. Friday. Dr. L. L. Weis will officiate, and burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.

The body is at the Hoskins funeral home.

Chester R. BENTZ Dies; Services Will Be Friday

Chester R. BENTZ, 60, of Fairfield, died Tuesday following a heart attack. He had lived in Chariton for approximately 25 years, until June 1953, when he was transferred by the Iowa Highway Commission to the district office in Fairfield.

Services will be held at the Methodist Church in Fairfield at 2 p.m. Friday. The Honor Guard of the Carl L. Caviness Post of the American Legion in Chariton will be in charge of graveside services and pallbearers will be men from the Chariton highway commission office.

BENTZ was in charge of the Chariton office during his years of residence here. He was serving as assistant district engineer in charge of construction in the 5th highway district, prior to his death.

He had suffered a mild heart attack in January and a more severe one Feb. 10.

He was prominent in the American Legion and Masonic Lodge in Chariton. He had served as Past Master of the Chariton Blue Lodge.

His first wife preceded him in death in January, 1954. He was remarried and Mrs. BENTZ and four sons from his first marriage survive. The sons are Chester jr., of Winterset, Bob of Orlando, Fla., Dick, in the U. S. Army, and Jim, who will shortly enter the U. S. Navy. Dick was ready to sail for overseas duty when called home by the illness of his father. Mr. and Mrs. BENTZ were taking Jim to Des Moines for a navy physical examination when BENTZ suffered his attack on Feb. 10. They had visited with Bob and his two grandsons in Orlando in January.

Burial services will be held in the Fairfield cemetery (sic - Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield).
