Perry Oliver BATES was the fourth and last surviving of the eight children of Ephrain and Mary BATES. Born on October 19, 1857 on the home farm in Buchanan township, of Jefferson county, Iowa he lived to be 2 days past eighty five years of age. All of his active farming life was spent in Buchanan township until he retired to Fairfield in 1920. About ten years ago he began dividing his time between Fairfield and Hollister, Calif. where his daughter, Edna and son Charles lived. It was at Edna's home he passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 1942.
On February 16, 1886 he was married to Bertha Belle WELKER and lived happily in this union till she passed away on Sept. 6, 1935. Seven children were born to them, six of whom survive. A son, Arthur died in infancy. He was vitally interested in the life of the church and never missed its service when able to attend and gave his time and money for worthy interests. His death was entirely unexpected. He had visited in Fairfield and been with all of his children. Returning to California he was stricken with a heart attack two days after arrival at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edna LOOFBOURROW, passing away in less than an hour.
