Marie C. DICKASON BATES

Marie C. DICKASON BATES, 82, died at 8:35 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at Jefferson County Hospital.

A celebration of life service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Raymond Funeral Home, with the Rev. Steven C. Page officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation began at noon today at the funeral home, with the family present from 6-8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Crossroads Hospice and Health Care of the Jefferson County Hospital Foundation. Condolences may be sent to her husband at Calu Apartments, 205 W. Briggs, apt. 221, Fairfield 52556.

Mrs. BATES was born Aug. 16, 1920, in Wells County, Ind., the daughter of Francis Marion DICKASON and Kathryn Irene SLEPPY DICKASON. She married bob FORD. They later divorced. She married Orland J. BATES in 1942.

Mrs. BATES graduated valedictorian in the class of 1937 at Huntington High School when she was 16. She attended Kalamazoo State College and worked at the Chickaming Country Club in Lakeside, Mich. After divorcing her first husband, she went to California and met her second husband. Following their marriage, they lived in Glendale and Canoga Park, Calif., for 21 years. She worked in many famous restaurants in southern California before moving to Fairfield in 1962 to run the Bates Motel with her husband. In 1979, the motel burned and they purchased Nydle's Nook in Ottumwa and moved to Batavia. When Wal-Mart opened in Fairfield, she became one of its first door greeters and worked there until February 2001. She had been a resident of Parkview Care Center since September 2002.

For many years, Mrs. BATES was active in the Fairfield Women's Bowling Association and was a golfer at Fairfield Golf and Country Club and Walton Club. Her pastimes included cooking, gardening, sewing and knitting.

Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Kathryn Lou COOK of Hartford City, Ind., Olivia SMITH and husband Gene of Bunceton, Mo., and Suzan KESSEL and husband Patrick of Fairfield; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. BATES was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Samuel Warren DICKASON and James Frederick DICKASON; and one great-grandson.
