Fred BATES, resident of Fairfield for the past 45 years, passed away this morning about 4 a.m. at the Jefferson county hospital. He had been in failing health the past two years and suffered a stroke Wednesday.
Last rites will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Hoskins funeral home with the Rev. Harold Rasche in charge. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.
Fred BATES, 66, was born Sept. 29, 1886, at Salina in Jefferson county. he was the son of Jerry and Melvina ANDERSON BATES. He was reared and educated in the Saline community, and was united in marriage on Nov. 25, 1908, to Beulah CONNELL. The wedding took place at Fairfield.
BATES moved to Fairfield 45 years ago and had made his home here since. The family home is at 809 S. Sixth street. He drove the Star Mail route between Fairfield and Packwood for the past several years and he was a member of the Degree of Honor.
Besides his wife he is survived by one son, Clarence "Nin" BATES, Davenport; his mother, who resides in California; a sister, Mrs. Ada BRADBURG, San Gabriel, Calif., and a brother, Clarence BATES, Birmingham.
He was preceded in death by his father and one daughter.
