Dr. J. M. BATCHELDER Dead.
From The Osborne, Kan., Farmer.

A remarkable man passed away Sunday, April 2d, at Fairfield, when Dr. BATCHELDER gave up life's battle. He was remarkable at least in the history of Albia, Ia., and Osborne, Kan., for between those two places he divided an active service of forty-five years in the Presbyterian ministry.

Joseph Mays BATCHELDER was born at Greenwood, Steuben county, N. Y., September 23d, 1822, and died at Fairfield, Ia., April 2d, 1905. He attended the common schools and worked on the farm in his native state until his father emigrated to Illinois in 1838. He was a graduate of Hanover college, Hanover, Ind., in the class of 1852, and of Princeton seminary in the class of 1855. He was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of Peoria in 1854, and ordained to the gospel ministry in April, 1856, by the Presbytery of Des Moines. He was pastor at Albia from April, 1856, until November, 1878, a period of twenty-two and a half years. In 1878 he came to Osborne, organized the church here, was installed pastor and continued to labor for twenty-two and a half years. He was the chief instrument in organizing Presbyterian churches at Downs, Rose Valley, Covert, Shiloh and other places in this region. He was stated clerk of Des Moines Presbytery for seventeen years and chairman of the Home Mission committee of Osborne Presbytery for twelve years. He assisted in organizing the Presbytery of Osborne, and it derived its name from the town in which he made his home. He was one of the men who make history--a man of great zeal, industry and ability--going through sunshine and storm to carry glad tidings to the feeble pioneer churches. His sermons were scholarly, profound and spiritual. He was a faithful friend and wise counselor in private life. His unfeigned humility, kindly spirit and quiet humor endeared him alike to old and young. He was a frequent contributor to the religious press and other periodicals. His articles for the press were characterized by clearness, strength and a penetrating and far-reaching knowledge of the needs of humanity. He was universally esteemed, and his life and example will long be a benediction to the communities in which he lived. He retired from the active duties of the ministry in 1901 and was placed on the honorably retired roll of the church and made pastor emeritus of the church at Osborne. His immediate family is composed of his widow, Mrs. Harriet BATCHELDER, and daughters, Mrs. T. J. BAIRD of Albia, Mrs. J. D. BONAR of Savannah, Mo., Mrs. W. L. STONE of New Rochelle, N. Y., and Miss Mina of Fairfield, Ia., by whom his loss will be most keenly felt and who have the sympathy of all who knew and loved him. His life is like a precious legacy to his church and the world. He has passed over the silent river and entered the heavenly city. May the great head of the church send us more like him.
